Focus on Your Front Garden
Your front garden is part of your home's first impression, and building work often leaves it looking worse for wear.
Start with the basics. Clear away any remaining building debris, flatten out areas where ground has been disturbed, and repair any damaged lawn. If your grass is beyond saving, you might need to re-turf or re-seed, but it's worth it for the improvement in appearance.
Weeds in your front garden or driveway make everything look scruffy. A good clear-out of weeds, followed by regular maintenance, keeps things looking tidy. If weeds are a constant problem in your driveway or patio, consider using a weed-suppressing membrane under gravel or addressing gaps in paving where weeds take hold.
Even simple planting makes a difference. You don't need to be a gardening expert – a few hardy shrubs, some colourful plants in pots by your front door, or a well-maintained hedge can all lift your home's appearance. If you're really not into gardening, go for low-maintenance options like evergreen shrubs that look decent year-round without much effort.
Driveways and Paths
Your driveway and front path take a lot of wear, especially during building work. If yours is damaged or just looking tired, it might be time for an upgrade.
Cleaning can work wonders if the surface is basically sound. A good pressure wash can remove years of dirt, moss, and staining from block paving, concrete, or tarmac. Just be careful not to damage the surface – use the right pressure and technique.
If cleaning isn't enough, you've got options. Block paving can often be re-pointed and re-sanded to look much better. Tarmac can be re-surfaced if the base is still sound. Concrete can be repaired or resurfaced.
For a complete refresh, consider replacing your driveway entirely. Modern options like resin-bound surfaces, pattern-imprinted concrete, or high-quality block paving can completely transform the front of your property. Yes, it's an investment, but your driveway is a significant part of your home's frontage, and a good one makes a real impact.
External Lighting
Outdoor lighting serves two purposes – it makes your home safer and more secure, and it can look brilliant when done well.
Good lighting around your front door means you're not fumbling for keys in the dark. Motion-sensor lights provide security and convenience. And well-placed lights can highlight nice features of your property.
Solar lights are an easy option if you don't want to run electrical cables. They're cheap, simple to install, and can look surprisingly good. For a more permanent solution, proper mains-powered outdoor lighting looks more polished and tends to be brighter and more reliable.
Tidy Up Around the Edges
Small details matter more than you'd think. Rusty gutters, overflowing bins visible from the street, damaged fencing, or cluttered front areas all drag down your home's appearance.
Gutters and downpipes should be in good condition and securely fixed. If they're old, rusty, or sagging, replacing them isn't expensive and makes your roofline look much tidier. Modern UPVC guttering is low-maintenance and looks clean.
Bin storage is practical but rarely attractive. If your bins are on display at the front of your property, consider screening them with fencing or planting, or building a simple bin store. Just getting them out of direct view makes a difference.
Fencing and gates define your property boundary and contribute to the overall appearance. Broken fence panels, wonky gates, or peeling paint all need attention. Sometimes a repair and re-paint is enough; other times replacement is the better option.
Consider Your Roof
After a loft conversion or major renovation, your roof might look patchy where new work meets old, or you might simply have a tired-looking roof that lets down your otherwise improved property.
If your roof tiles are mismatched or some sections look much newer than others, it can be worth replacing the whole roof to create a uniform appearance. This is obviously a bigger investment, but if you're planning to stay in your home long-term or if you're preparing to sell, it can be worthwhile.
At minimum, make sure your roof is in good condition with no slipped or broken tiles, that your ridge tiles are sound, and that everything's weathertight. A roof that's clearly in poor condition worries potential buyers and makes your whole property look neglected.
Work With the Character of Your Home
When you're improving curb appeal, work with your property's style rather than against it.
Modern additions should complement rather than clash. If you've added a contemporary extension, you can embrace that contrast – many properties look brilliant with a mix of old and new. But the overall effect should be harmonious, not jarring.
Take Your Time and Get It Right
You've just finished a major building project, so you might not have the energy or budget to tackle curb appeal improvements immediately. That's fine. The important thing is that you do address it at some point.
Live with your newly extended or renovated home for a few weeks, see what bothers you about the exterior, and then make a plan. You don't have to do everything at once – tackle improvements in stages if that works better for your budget and schedule.
